Thousands of years ago, the realm of Asgard went to war with an ancient race known as the Dark Elves, who sought to destroy the universe and plunge it into eternal darkness using their super-weapon, the Aether. However, the Asgardians won the battle, and hid the Aether away in a secret location for centuries.
On modern day earth, a phenomenon called the Convergence is beginning to take place, and Dr. Jane Foster seeks to study it. This event is incredibly rare, and only happens when all of the Nine Realms line up together in perfect synchronization. While studying this, Jane accidentally stumbles into another realm and finds the Aether. She touches it, and it takes over her body, making her it’s host. This causes Malekith, the leader of the Dark Elves, to awaken from his centuries-long slumber, and attack Asgard in search of Jane and the Aether.
Thor must now protect Jane and the Nine Realms from the threat of eternal darkness once again. On this quest, must suffer the loss of loved ones, learn to forgive betrayal, and discover his true calling as the protector of the Realms.
