Fred C. Dobbs is a down on his luck American drifter wandering in small town Mexico. When he finally gets some money, he and his new-found partner Bob Curtain fall in with Bob, an old prospector who spins tales of gold mining in the Mexican hills. But Bob also warns that gold can change a man, echoing the Bible's warning that the love of money is the root of all evil. Fred thinks himself immune from its lure, but he discovers that once the gold starts to glitter it can become a fire that sears a man's conscience and drives him to terrible deeds.
